Practise the terminology
Biology carries a specialised vocabulary, and questions often turn on precise use of it. Make sure you can define important terms and use them correctly.
Learn to read diagrams
Interpret biological diagrams rather than memorising how they look. A familiar structure drawn from an unfamiliar angle still has to be readable to you.
Practise application
Ask yourself what would happen if a condition changed. Questions that test application are the ones that separate understanding from recall.
Master the vocabulary of comparison
Biology questions frequently ask you to distinguish between things that sound similar: mitosis and meiosis, arteries and veins, xylem and phloem, respiration and photosynthesis. Revising these as pairs, with the differences written side by side, is far more effective than learning each in isolation and hoping the contrast is obvious under pressure.
Expect application, not recitation
A question rarely asks you to state a definition outright. It describes a situation and asks what would follow. Practise by taking any process you have revised and asking what happens if a step is blocked, a substance is absent, or a condition changes. If you can answer that, you understand it.
Do not neglect ecology and human biology
Students often concentrate on cell biology and genetics because they feel like the "real" content, and lose easy marks on ecology, nutrition, health and the environment. Those topics are usually more straightforward to revise, which makes neglecting them an expensive habit.
Draw it yourself
Redrawing a diagram from memory — then checking it — exposes gaps that simply looking at one never will. If you cannot label it without help, you do not yet know it, however familiar it looked on the page.
Use past questions as a map
Find the topics where you repeatedly make mistakes, then go and revise those topics specifically. A pattern across several practice sessions is far more informative than any single score.
If you can explain a process to someone else without notes, you know it. If you can only recognise it when you see the right answer, you do not — and UTME will find the difference.
