Master the fundamentals first
Do not rush into hard questions while basic concepts are shaky. Advanced problems usually fail at a basic step.
Practise varied question types
Solving only the comfortable examples produces confidence that does not survive the exam hall. Deliberately work on the shapes of question you avoid.
Learn from recurring errors
Keep track of the mistakes that repeat. A pattern of errors is far more useful than a total score.
Build usable speed
A method that takes five minutes in practice is too slow for a paper that averages around forty seconds a question. Once you are comfortable with the mathematics, work on solving familiar problem types more efficiently.
Do not let one question sink the paper
A hard question does not have to be solved now. If you are stuck, move on and come back — a question you never reached costs the same as one you got wrong, and there may be easier marks further down.
Use the options as part of the method
Because every question is multiple choice, the options are information. Working backwards from them is often faster than solving forwards, and it is a legitimate technique rather than a shortcut:
- Substitute the options into the equation and see which one satisfies it.
- Estimate roughly, then discard options that are nowhere near.
- Check the sign and magnitude before doing any careful arithmetic.
- For "which of the following" questions, test the cheapest option to evaluate first.
Build a mental toolkit for common shapes
A large proportion of UTME Mathematics is drawn from a recognisable set of problem shapes. The aim of practice is that seeing one triggers the method automatically, leaving your thinking time for the questions that genuinely need it. That recognition only comes from repeated exposure across different years.
Do the arithmetic without a calculator
Practise mental and written calculation while you revise. Fluency with fractions, percentages, indices and simple manipulation removes a steady drip of avoidable errors and saves seconds on every question — which adds up across 40 of them.
Log your errors by cause, not by topic. "Sign error" appearing eight times is a more actionable finding than "algebra" appearing eight times.
