Practical: On a raised and covered platform, paint a 25 litre plastic jerrycan as placed before you. Media: Cardboard paper; Water colour or Poster colour. Note: Your painting work must be dried before packaging to avoid smudging.

Model answer

PRACTICAL WORKED SOLUTION (painting from observation): 1. Arrange: place the jerrycan on the raised platform with light falling from one side; sit so you see its front and one side (a 3/4 view). 2. Position the cardboard paper (portrait or landscape) and lightly sketch the jerrycan with a pencil, making it fill about two-thirds of the paper. Draw the main body as a box, then add the sloping top, the handle on one corner and the cap/spout. 3. Check proportion: the height is a little more than the width; the handle and cap sit on the upper side. Show the base ellipse/ground line and the platform under it. 4. Colour: lay the lightest base colour (the jerrycan's colour) first with a flat wash of water/poster colour, then paint the handle and cap. 5. Shade: add darker tone on the side away from the light, and a lighter highlight on the side facing the light; paint a cast shadow on the platform. 6. Background and platform: paint the platform and a plain background so that the object stands out. 7. Finish: clean the edges, write your name/number as instructed, and let the painting dry fully before packaging so it does not smudge.
