5. Outline five ways in which citizens can checkmate political officeholders in Nigeria.

i. Vote them out/participate in the electoral process: Citizens can vote out underperforming or corrupt political officeholders during elections by participating actively in the electoral process. ii. Advocate for policy changes: Citizens can push for changes in policies that will enhance transparency and accountability through petitions, public forums, and engaging with their representatives. iii. Monitor government activities: Citizens can keep a close watch on government activities by attending public meetings, following government reports, and using platforms that track government actions. iv. Demand transparency and accountability: Citizens can demand openness in government operations and accountability from political officeholders by requesting access to public records and supporting initiatives like the Freedom of Information Act. v. Organized protests: Citizens can organize and participate in peaceful protests to express their dissatisfaction with political officeholders and demand better governance. (Also acceptable: lobby the legislature, harness new/social media, international advocacy, sustained civic participation, grassroots mobilization, engage the courts, petition regional/international bodies, whistle-blowing.)
