9. In six ways, justify the reasons why local government authorities are created in Nigeria. (12 marks)

Model answer

1. Bringing Government Closer to the People: Local government is established to reduce the gap between citizens and the authorities, making it easier for people to access government services, information, and assistance without having to travel far. 2. Provision of Basic Services: It helps to deliver essential services like primary education, healthcare, water supply, waste disposal, and rural roads directly to communities where they are needed most. 3. Encouraging Local Participation: Local government creates opportunities for people to take part in decision-making and administration, giving room for people to contribute ideas and monitor how their communities are managed. 4. Giving a Sense of Belonging: By involving local people in governance, it makes citizens feel recognised and valued, strengthening unity and loyalty to the state. 5. Decentralisation of Power: Local government reduces the concentration of power at the centre, ensuring that authority and responsibility are spread across different levels of government for efficiency and effectiveness. 6. Mobilising Resources for Development: It helps to gather local human and material resources, which can be used to implement projects and programmes that improve the standard of living in the area, and serves as a link between central and rural communities, a training ground for future leaders, and a means of maintaining law and order through local enforcement agencies.
