Mathematics improves through understanding plus repeated practice. Reading a worked example makes a method look easy; the real test is solving a new problem yourself.

Understand the method, not the trigger

Do not learn "when I see this question, use this formula". Ask why the formula works. Understanding the method is what lets you adapt when the question changes shape.

Show your working

Write your steps when practising. If your answer is wrong you can then tell whether the problem was in substitution, calculation, algebra, interpretation, or the final step. Without working, a wrong answer teaches you nothing.

Fix the foundation first

If you struggle with advanced questions, check whether the real cause is a weak foundation. Difficulty with algebraic problems often traces back to shaky basic manipulation. Repair that first — it is faster than fighting the symptom.

Practise regularly, in short sessions

Mathematics responds to consistency. Several short sessions across a week beat one enormous session followed by days of nothing.

Do not skip difficult questions

  1. Try it.
  2. Identify exactly where you got stuck.
  3. Review the method.
  4. Study the solution.
  5. Close it.
  6. Try again independently.

The last step is the one people skip, and it is the one that proves you learned something.

Build speed with accuracy

As the examination approaches, practise completing sets within a realistic time. The target is not raw speed but speed, accuracy and clear reasoning together — a fast wrong answer scores the same as a slow one.

Learn to check your own work

Most lost marks in Mathematics are not caused by not knowing the topic. They come from arithmetic slips, dropped minus signs, misread values and answers left in the wrong form. Build a habit of a quick sanity check before moving on:

  • Does the answer have a sensible size? A length of −4 or a probability of 3 is wrong before you check anything else.
  • Did you answer the question that was asked, or a related one? Finding x is not the same as finding 2x + 1.
  • Are the units and the form correct — decimal places, simplest fraction, degrees or radians?
  • If you substituted your answer back in, would it work?

Keep a formula sheet you wrote yourself

Copying a printed formula list does very little. Building your own — adding each formula as you meet it, in your own notation, with a note of when it applies — forces you to process it. Reviewing that sheet for five minutes before a practice session is one of the highest-return habits available.

Practise the topics you dislike

There is a strong pull towards practising what you are already good at, because it feels productive. It is not. If you always skip the same topic, examiners will find it. Deliberately schedule your weakest area first in a session, while your concentration is highest.

A useful weekly test: pick the topic you would least like to be asked about, and spend one session on it. If nothing on that list ever changes, your revision is not working.
