Mathematics is the subject where practice matters most and where the gap between "I understood the example" and "I can solve this myself" is widest. Working through complete past papers is how you find out which side of that gap you are on.

Work the paper, not just the questions
There is a real difference between answering twenty scattered questions and sitting a whole paper. A full paper mixes topics without warning, puts easy and hard questions next to each other, and forces you to manage your time across all of it. Once you are comfortable with individual topics, start working through complete papers instead.
Write your working, even in practice
It is tempting to do objective questions in your head and just pick an option. Resist it. Written working is the only way to tell, afterwards, whether a wrong answer came from a misunderstanding or a slip — and those need completely different fixes.
- Substitution error — you used the wrong value.
- Manipulation error — the algebra went wrong.
- Arithmetic error — the method was right, the numbers were not.
- Interpretation error — you solved a different problem than the one asked.
- Presentation error — the answer was right but in the wrong form or unit.
Objective and theory need different practice
Objective questions reward speed, elimination and mental estimation. Theory questions reward setting out a clear method that a marker can follow and award partial credit for. Practising only one leaves you exposed on the other, so make sure both appear in your revision if your paper includes both.
Check before you move on
Most marks lost in Mathematics are not lost to difficult topics. They go to answers that were nearly right. A few seconds of checking catches a surprising number of them.

Track errors by cause, not by topic
A tally showing "algebra: 8 wrong" tells you very little. A tally showing "dropped a minus sign: 8 times" tells you exactly what to practise. Group your mistakes by what went wrong rather than by chapter, and the fix usually becomes obvious.
If you can only solve a question after seeing the worked solution, you have not learned it yet. Close the solution, wait a day, and try it again from scratch — that second attempt is the one that counts.
