TASK II: MANUSCRIPT Instructions: (a) Type this passage with 14 font size. (b) Indent the paragraphs at 5 character spaces. (c) Set margin at 15 and 70. (d) Type in double-line spacing. (e) Omission of words will be penalised. (f) Render all abbreviations in full.
Model answer
1. Set font 14, margins 15 and 70, double spacing, paragraph indent of 5 spaces. 2. Type the heading in capitals (the 'Cap' sign circles the heading WINDOW BOXES). 3. Apply the correction signs: 'uc' makes the letter upper case; 'trs' interchanges words; '#' inserts a space; 'stet' means leave the struck word as it was; the circled word is retained; the '=¶' sign starts a new paragraph at 'Window boxes can be used'. 4. Write '&' as 'and' and expand any abbreviation (render all abbreviations in full). Typed text (double spacing): WINDOW BOXES A window box can be far more than a container for growing plants, be it made of metal, stone, wood or plastic. It should be decorative and fit in with its surroundings, but as the main decoration is obtained from the flowers or plants themselves nothing should be done to detract from them. Window boxes can be used very effectively for spring-flowering bulbs and, of course, for summer-flowering plants to give an almost continuous display. This kind of plant container, including the variety of tubs now produced by the plastics industry, can be used to cover unsightly objects, and can do much to improve the appearance of terraces, patios and large paved areas.
