PASSAGE I (Mrs. Ajah) The breeze that accompanied Mrs. Ajah into our classroom that day was serene, peaceful as well as refreshing. This was fortune predicting; an end to our academic backwardness. "Good morning aunty," we hurriedly chorused. "Good morning pupils," she responded. "Next time, call me Mrs. Ajah," she firmly added. She later explained that "aunt" meant the sister of one's parent not one's teacher, as we had thought. Before Mrs. Ajah became our class teacher, my classmates and I were lagging behind in reading, spelling and writing. It was this new teacher who ensured we overcame our shortcomings in these areas. Usually, she gave us long passages to read, making sure we took cognisance of punctuation marks and pronounced every word therein correctly. Her uncommon story telling ability and apt explanation of difficult words made those passages memorable as well as aroused our interest in reading. It was her unorthodox method of using a whip called 'koboko', to punish pupils who failed to properly take their notes, that instilled diligence in us. So, we began to carefully observe writing conventions whenever we wrote. She taught us how to correctly spell words, even confusing ones like pneumonia and knuckles, which we had once spelt as knewmonia and knockle. Mrs. Ajah always reminded us that most English words are not pronounced the same way they are written because of their foreign origin. Anytime I think about hard work and academic excellence, I remember this teacher. [Passage I] According to the writer, Mrs. Ajah was a ____ teacher.
- A. careful
- B. diligentCorrect
- C. generous
- D. loving
Explanation
The writer credits her hard work and the diligence she instilled in pupils; 'diligent' fits best. The passage does not use any of the five words directly, so confidence is moderate.
