1. Government ensures the promotion and protection of national sovereignty. 2. Modern government is saddled with the responsibility of making laws for the good of the country. 3. It is the duty of government to implement government policy. 4. It is the duty of government to provide national leadership; protecting the rights of citizens at home and abroad. 5. It is the duty of government to maintain internal law, peace and order; police and courts are established for this purpose. 6. Government establishes and equips a standing armed force to protect the state against internal and external attack (defense). 7. Government ensures that the welfare of the people is prioritized, e.g. care for the aged, poverty reduction. 8. Administration of justice/adjudication of disputes: it is the duty of the law court which is an arm of government to settle disputes and administer justice; this creates an enabling environment for state institutions to function effectively. 9. Government is responsible for control, regulation and managing of the economy of the state in order to protect the economy and support economic growth. 10. Provision of employment opportunities. (Other acceptable functions: it is the responsibility of government to protect the lives and property of citizens; it is the duty of government to make provision for essential services such as good roads, electricity, pipe-borne water and hospitals.)
