A student places a piece of celery in a solution of salt and water. After several hours, the celery becomes limp. What process best explains the result?

  • A. Active transport
  • B. OsmosisCorrect
  • C. Diffusion
  • D. Endocytosis

Explanation

The salt solution has a higher solute concentration compared to the inside of the celery cells. Water from the cells will move out into the surrounding salt solution, trying to balance the concentration of solutes on both sides of the membrane.
