Explanation

This has to do with tense sequence or sequence of tense. When more than one tense occur in a sentence, there must be an agreement among them. The action of the first clause happened earlier before the action of the second clause. It thus require that both verb in the sentences be in their past form i.e. 'sat and had left'.
