What WAEC expects of you

WAEC publishes examination information, timetables and subject syllabuses for candidates. Plan your preparation against the official material for your own examination year, not around a generic topic list.

For 2026 and 2027, WAEC's entry regulations state that candidates enter between eight and nine subjects, with English Language and General Mathematics currently the applicable core subjects. The newly introduced Citizenship and Heritage Studies and Digital Technologies are not to be examined until 2028.

Why past questions help

You can spend weeks on a topic and still meet a question that asks you to apply it in a way you have not seen. Practising real questions is how you find that out while there is still time to fix it. It builds recall, application, speed, and familiarity with how examiners actually phrase things.

Practising past questions is not the same as memorising past answers. The goal is to understand the material well enough to answer when the question is worded differently.

How to work through a paper

1. Study the topic first — do not use questions as a substitute for learning.
2. Attempt each question before looking at the answer.
3. For every mistake, work out which kind it was: knowledge, misreading, rushing, calculation, or a forgotten detail.
4. Read the explanation until the reasoning makes sense, not just the letter.
5. Come back to the topic later and attempt similar questions again.

Not every WAEC subject has the same paper

The 2026 WASSCE timetable shows objective and essay components for subjects such as Mathematics and Government, and additional practical or alternative components for others. If your subject includes practical work, do not prepare only by reading theory. If it includes essays, practise writing full answers.
