5(b) State three differences between nitrogen fixation and denitrification.

Model answer

During nitrogen fixation, nitrogen is converted to nitrate; during denitrification, nitrate is converted to atmospheric nitrogen. Nitrogen fixation involves nitrogen-fixing bacteria while denitrification involves denitrifying bacteria. Nitrogen fixation requires moderate soil temperature while denitrification requires high soil temperature.
