6.(c)(i) State four characteristics of a salt marsh habitat. (ii) Explain briefly how plants are modified for anchorage in a salt marsh habitat.

Model answer

(i) A salt marsh habitat is characterized by: a high level of salinity; domination by halophytes; formation on depositional coasts; plants having varying levels of salt tolerance. (ii) Plants are modified by possessing silt roots for anchorage and possessing long/numerous roots to grip the loose, waterlogged substrate.
