6(a) 'You wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt because you besought me...' Trace the circumstances under which the above statement was made. (Matthew 18:21-35)

1. Peter asked Jesus how many times he should forgive his brother, suggesting seven times. 2. Jesus replied that he should forgive seventy times seven, and told a parable to illustrate this. 3. A king wished to settle accounts with his servants, and one servant owed him ten thousand talents. 4. Unable to pay, the servant begged for patience, and the king, moved with compassion, forgave him the whole debt. 5. That same servant then found a fellow servant who owed him a hundred denarii and had him thrown into prison for failing to pay. 6. Other servants, distressed by this, reported the matter to the king. 7. The king summoned the unforgiving servant, rebuked him for his lack of mercy, and handed him over to the jailers until he should pay all that he owed.
