7(a) Give an account of Gamaliel's intervention during the arrest of the apostles. (Acts 5:17-42)
Model answer
1. The Sanhedrin, out of jealousy, arrested the apostles and put them in prison. 2. An angel of the Lord released them by night, and they went to the temple to continue teaching. 3. The apostles were re-arrested and brought before the council, who were enraged and wanted to kill them. 4. Gamaliel, a respected Pharisee and teacher of the law, urged the council to exercise restraint. 5. He cited the failed movements of Theudas and Judas of Galilee as examples that a movement not of God would collapse on its own. 6. The council heeded his advice, had the apostles flogged, warned them, and let them go.
