3.(a) Define optimum population. (b) In what three ways can rapid population growth slow down the rate of economic development? (c) Describe any three measures that can be adopted to control rapid population growth.

Model answer

(a) Optimum population is the level of population which ensures the maximum/most efficient use of all the available resources of the economy. (b) Rapid population growth can slow down economic development by: destabilising economic planning; placing more pressure on infrastructure; leading to overpopulation and its associated social problems. (c) Measures to control rapid population growth: ensuring family planning; encouraging late marriage; enforcement of laws to regulate family size.
