The newspaper reported that everybody died in the accident ______.

  • A. hardly
  • B. almostCorrect
  • C. scarcely
  • D. barely

Explanation

Hardly, scarcely and barely are synonymous, and they are unfit for the sentence because they would contrast the meaning. 'Almost' in the sentence '...almost everybody died in the accident' is correct to mean a large number of people died; hardly/scarcely/barely would instead be used as in '...people hardly/scarcely/barely survived the accident'.
