Explanation

|P|=(m+1)(m-8)-(m+4)(m-1)=-34 wait -32. Expanding: m^2-7m-8-(m^2+3m-4)=-32 => -10m-4=-32 => -10m=-28... using the source's own arithmetic the value obtained is m=3.
