7(b). The following were the roles played by local newspapers in the struggle against colonial rule.

(i) Dissemination of information: local newspapers helped disseminate information concerning the evils of colonialism, providing important sources of information about the activities of colonial government. (ii) Sensitization: through different columns and editorial pages, people were educated and sensitized about the need for independence, and the importance of the struggle against colonialism. (iii) Political consciousness: nationalist newspapers aroused the political consciousness of the people through their publications, raising the level of political awareness among the people. (iv) Channel of communication: newspapers provided nationalist leaders with a platform to communicate their political ideas and visions to the people, enabling them to mobilize the masses against colonial rule.
