6. Innal-Halala bayyinun wa 'innal-Harama bayyinun, wabaynahuma 'umurun mushtabihat la ya lamuhunna kathirun mina-Nas. [Hadith 6 of an-Nawawi]. (a) Translate the above Hadith into English. (b) Comment on it.

Model answer

(a) Translation: Verily, the lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are matters unclear (ambiguous), which many people do not know (whether they are lawful or unlawful). (b) Comment: From this Hadith it can be derived that lawful things are clearly established in Islam; it can also be deduced that unlawful things are equally clearly established; it teaches that there are matters that are not clear — are they lawful or unlawful; these unclear matters are not known by many people; and few people know/understand these unclear matters, so a cautious Muslim avoids them.
