8. Assess the character of Mrs. Hardcastle in the play.

Mrs. Hardcastle is the mother of Tony Lumpkin and stepmother of Kate Hardcastle. She is the matriarch of the house and is impudent and rude. These are instances of dramatic irony in the play. There is use of dramatic irony as end. Tony approaches its end. Mrs. Hardcastle through a journey within the garden and lies that they are approaching Crackskull Common. Mrs. Hardcastle is left frustrated on her plan and she is the only sad character at the end of the play.
