The theme of love and revenge is played out through the relationship between Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, which the relationship between Lockwood and Heathcliff (as landlord and tenant) unlocks the mysteries of. Heathcliff is a dark-skinned gypsy from Liverpool and Lockwood's landlord; Lockwood, a wealthy gentleman renting Thrushcross Grange, is uncomfortable at Wuthering Heights but finds Heathcliff's hospitality significant. Their relationship reveals a pattern of power/authority through which one could be corrupt; Lockwood eventually learns Heathcliff's history and unhappiness through Nelly Dean, coming to understand and feel sorry for his landlord, and later learns the circumstances of Heathcliff's death from Nelly.
