4. A 50N force is applied to the free end of a spiral spring of force constant, 100Nm⁻¹. Calculate the work done by the force to stretch the spring.
Model answer
To find the workdone (w) by the force to stretch the string: Recall w = ½ke², with F=ke, e=F/k. So, w = ½ × k × (F/k)² = ½ × F²/k w = ½ × 50²/100 = ½ × 2500/100 = 12.5 J.
