The capturing and digestion of insects by a pitcher plant is a special form of nutrition that is
- A. chemosynthetic
- B. saprophytic
- C. heterotrophicCorrect
- D. autotrophic
Explanation
Even though pitcher plants (and other carnivorous plants) can photosynthesize, they still have to trap insects and other small animals to obtain nitrogen. Thus, they exhibit both autotrophy and heterotrophy. Since we are concerned about their capturing and digestion of insects, this demonstrates heterotrophic nutrition.
