14. Explain briefly how genes are involved in the process of evolution.

Model answer

Genes are inherited by the next generation through reproduction. Sometimes a mutation may cause a change in the gene, which alters the expression of a trait or produces a different characteristic. Some of the newly acquired traits make an organism better adapted to its environment, and the traits may be passed on to offspring of different generations.
