5(a-ii). In the extraction of aluminium from bauxite, state the: (I) substance used for purifying the ore; (II) composition of the mixture electrolysed.
Model answer
(I) Aqueous sodium hydroxide/caustic soda solution (NaOH(aq)) is used to purify the bauxite ore. (II) The mixture electrolysed is molten alumina (Al2O3) dissolved in molten cryolite (Na3AlF6).
