1. On the first day of the week, Cleopas and another disciple were travelling to Emmaus discussing the events of the crucifixion and resurrection. 2. Jesus drew near and joined them, but they were kept from recognising him. 3. They explained to him their sorrow over Jesus' death and the report of the empty tomb from the women. 4. Jesus rebuked their unbelief and, beginning with Moses and the prophets, explained the scriptures concerning himself. 5. As it grew late, they urged him to stay with them. 6. At the table, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and their eyes were opened, and they recognised him, whereupon he vanished from their sight.
