1. Fertile, well-drained soil. 2. Favourable climate (rainfall 1,200-2,000mm annually; temperatures 25°C-28°C). 3. Rich, loamy soils found in areas like Ondo, Osun and Cross River states. 4. Shade from forest cover for young cocoa plants. 5. Availability of labour for planting, weeding and harvesting; access to markets and roads (e.g. Port Harcourt) also helps.
