9(a) Distinguish between a Secretary of State for the Colonies and a Governor-General in the British Colonial administration. [2 marks]
Model answer
The Secretary of State for the colonies was a cabinet member (a minister) who was responsible for the general supervision of all British colonies. The Governor-General, on the other hand, was an appointee of the British government and was in charge of a colony of Britain. While the colony was under the Governor-General as the head, he was answerable to the Secretary of State for the colonies.
