Two strings each inclined at an angle of 30° to the horizontal are used to hold a bucket of water weighing 20 N. Calculate the tension in each string.

  • A. 20√3 N
  • B. 20 NCorrect
  • C. 10√3 N
  • D. 10 N

Explanation

By symmetry, the two equal tensions each make 60° with the horizontal (30° with the vertical each side), and applying the sine rule/resolving forces gives T₁ = T₂ = 20 N.
