6. An object of volume 400 cm³ and density 2.5 gcm⁻³ is suspended from a spring balance with half its volume immersed in water. Determine the reading on the spring balance. (Density of water = 1gcm⁻³) A. 1200g B. 1000g C. 800g D. 400g

Diagram for question 6
  • A. 1200g
  • B. 1000g
  • C. 800gCorrect
  • D. 400g

Explanation

Mass of object = 400×2.5=1000g (=Weight 1000g-wt). Upthrust = volume immersed × density of water = (400/2)×1 = 200g. Reading = 1000-200 = 800g.
