(a) An account of the crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:1-31): i. The LORD instructed Moses to tell the people of Israel to turn back and encamp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, in front of Baalzephon. ii. They were to encamp over against it, by the sea. iii. The LORD would harden the heart of Pharaoh and Pharaoh would pursue the Israelites, and the LORD would get glory over Pharaoh and all his host. iv. When the king of Egypt was told that the people of Israel had fled, the minds of Pharaoh and his servants changed over the people of Israel. v. The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh; he took with him six hundred chariots and all other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. vi. The Egyptian army pursued the Israelites and overtook them encamped at the sea, by Pihahiroth, in front of Baalzephon. vii. The people of Israel lifted up their eyes and saw the Egyptians marching after them; the Israelites murmured against Moses for fear of the Egyptians. viii. Moses told the people not to fear but to stand firm and see the salvation of the LORD, for the Egyptians they saw would see no more. ix. The LORD instructed Moses to tell the Israelites to go forward. x. The LORD instructed Moses to lift up his rod and stretch out his hand over the sea and divide it, that the Israelites might go on dry ground through the sea. xi. The angel of God who went before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel; there was darkness on one side and light on the other, and the two did not come near each other all night. xii. Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the waters were divided. xiii. The people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground. xiv. The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea. xv. In the morning watch, the LORD looked down on the host of the Egyptians and discomfited (troubled) them, clogging their chariot wheels so they drove heavily. xvi. The LORD instructed Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea again, that the water might come back upon the Egyptians, their chariots and horsemen. xvii. Moses did as the LORD instructed and the Egyptians ran into the sea and drowned in it. xviii. (a) THE EVENTS THAT LED TO THE PRONOUNCEMENT OF PUNISHMENT ON THE HOUSEHOLD OF ELI (1 Samuel 2:12-17; 22-36): i. The sons of Eli were worthless men. They had no regard for the LORD. ii. The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, and thrust it into the pan, kettle, or caldron; all that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. So they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. iii. Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, 'Give meat for the priest to roast; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw.' And if the man said to him, 'Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,' he would say, 'No, you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.' iv. The sin of Ophni and Phinehas was very great in the sight of the LORD, for they treated the offering of the LORD with contempt. v. Eli was very old and heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who served at the entrance of the tent of meeting. vi. Eli said to his sons, 'Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people. No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading abroad. If a man sins against a man, God will mediate for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?' vii. However, they would not listen to the voice of their father; for it was the will of the LORD to slay them. viii. A man of God came to Eli and carried out the pronouncement of God over his house. ix. God had chosen the house of Eli to be priests unto Him, but they had looked with greedy eyes at the LORD's sacrifices, and had also treated the sacrifice of God with contempt. x. The LORD declared that those who honoured Him He would honour, but those who despised Him would be lightly esteemed. xi. As a result of their sins, Hophni and Phinehas would both die on the same day. xii. The LORD would raise up for Himself a faithful priest who would do according to His will. (b) WAYS BY WHICH PARENTS CAN MAKE THEIR CHILDREN RESPONSIBLE: i. Parents should lead by good example in the home. ii. Parents should rebuke their children for their wrong doings. iii. Parents should not take with levity matters concerning their children. iv. Children should be taught the ways of the LORD from childhood. v. Parents should create more time for their children. vi. Training up children should start early enough.

The Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah and told him that David was hiding himself on the hill of Hachilah, which was on the east of Jeshimon. ii. Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, with three thousand chosen men of Israel, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. iii. Saul encamped on the hill of Hachilah, which was beside the road on the east of Jeshimon. iv. But David remained in the wilderness; and when he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness, David sent out spies, and learned of a certainty that Saul had come. v. Then David rose and came to the place where Saul had encamped; and David saw the place where Saul lay, with Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army. vi. Saul was lying within the encampment, while the army was encamped around him. vii. Then David asked Ahimelech the Hittite, and Joab's brother Abishai the son of Zeruiah, who would go down with him into the camp to Saul. viii. Abishai volunteered to go down with David. ix. David and Abishai went to the army by night. x. They found Saul sleeping within the encampment, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the army lay around him. xi. Abishai said to David, 'God has given your enemy into your hand this day; now therefore let me pin him to the earth with one stroke of the spear, and I will not strike him twice.' xii. However, David said to Abishai, 'Do not destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless?' xiii. David said, 'As the LORD lives, the LORD will smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish. The LORD forbid that I should put forth my hand against the LORD's anointed; but take now the spear that is at his head, and the jar of water, and let us go.' xiv. David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul's head; and they went away, and no man saw it, or knew it, nor did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen upon them. xv. Then David went over to the other side, and stood far off on the top of the mountain, with a great space between them. xvi. David called to the army, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, 'Will you not answer, Abner?' Then Abner answered, 'Who are you that calls to the king?' xvii. David said to Abner, 'Are you not a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord. This thing that you have done is not good. David asked Saul why he was pursuing him knowing that he had done him no wrong. xxi. Then Saul said, 'I have done wrong; return, my son David, for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day; behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.' (b) TWO QUALITIES WE CAN DERIVE FROM DAVID'S ATTITUDE: i. We should learn to forgive our enemies. ii. Vengeance is of the LORD. iii. Rather than listening to human counsels, we should listen to God. iv. When we are obedient to God, He will put our enemies in our hands. v. We should allow God to have His way in every situation.

(a) JOSIAH'S RESPONSE TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE BOOK OF THE LAW IN THE TEMPLE: i. In the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan the secretary to the house of the LORD. ii. Josiah commanded Shaphan the secretary to go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he might reckon the amount of the money which had been brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the threshold had collected from the people. iii. The money should be given into the hands of the workmen who had the oversight of the house (the carpenters, the builders, the masons), as well as for buying timber and quarried stone to repair the house. iv. No accounting should be asked from them for the money delivered into their hands, for they dealt honestly. v. Subsequently, Hilkiah the high priest told Shaphan the secretary that he had found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan and he read it. vi. Shaphan the secretary came to the king, and reported to the king, 'Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have oversight of the house of the LORD.' vii. Then Shaphan the secretary told the king, 'Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.' And Shaphan read it before the king. viii. When the king (Josiah) heard the words of the book of the law, he rent his clothes. ix. The king commanded Hilkiah and Shaphan and the rest to go and inquire of the LORD for him, for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of the book that had been found, 'for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.' (b) THREE WAYS IN WHICH THE RELIGIOUS SITUATION TODAY IS SIMILAR TO JOSIAH'S DAYS: i. People have abandoned the true teaching of the word of God for worldly things. ii. People now idolize material things at the expense of the word of God. iii. There is immorality in the church and society. iv. People are not faithful to the service of God. v. There is deception in the church and society.

Jesus went with his disciples (Peter, James and John) to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Sit here, while I go yonder and pray.' ii. Taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. iii. Then he said to them, 'My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.' iv. Going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, 'My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.' v. Jesus came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, 'So, could you not watch with me one hour? The servant fell on his knees and begged his lord to have patience with him, that he would pay him everything. v. But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, 'Pay what you owe.' vii. James teaches that if we really fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture that we shall love our neighbour as ourselves, we do well. ii. But if we show partiality, we commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. iii. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point of it has become guilty of all of it. iv. For he who said, 'Do not commit adultery,' said also, 'Do not kill.' If you do not commit adultery but do kill, you have become a transgressor of the law. v. So, speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. vi. Judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy; yet mercy triumphs over judgment. (a) OUTLINE PETER'S RECOMMENDATION THAT BELIEVERS SHOULD INTERACT WITH UNBELIEVERS IN THE SOCIETY: i. Peter told them to subject themselves to every human institution, whether it is the Emperor or the Governors that have been sent to reward those who do good and punish those who do wrong. ii. According to Peter, if they do this, they will put to silence the ignorance of foolish men. iii. He advised them to live as free men but should not use their freedom as a pretext to engage in evil. iv. They should live as servants of God. v. They should honour all men, love the brotherhood, fear God and honour the emperor. vi. Peter explained that they would receive no glory if they are punished for doing the wrong thing, but if they are punished for doing the right thing and they endure, it is acceptable before God. vii. Peter concluded that Christ himself suffered the same fate. viii. According to Peter, Jesus was reviled but he did not reply. (b) STATE THREE WAYS BY WHICH CHRISTIANS CAN LIVE ABOVE REPROACH IN THE SOCIETY: i. Christians must copy Christ's example in the society. ii. Christians must be peace lovers. iii.
