(ii) Exfoliation is the peeling off of rock surfaces due to alternate expansion (by day, as outer layers of heated rock expand faster than the cooler interior) and contraction (by night, as the outer layer cools more rapidly). Frost action occurs in polar/temperate regions where water collects in cracks or joints of rocks on high mountains; this water freezes at night or in winter, and the resulting expansion causes the rock to crack.
