2. (a) Solve: 7x + 4 < ½(4x+3) (b) Salem, Sunday and Shaka shared a sum of ₦1,100.00. For every ₦2.00 that Salem gets, Sunday gets 50 kobo and for every ₦4.00 Sunday gets, Shaka gets ₦2.00. Find Shaka's share.
Model answer
(a) Multiply through by 2: 2(7x+4) < 4x+3 ⇒ 14x+8 < 4x+3 ⇒ 14x−4x < 3−8 ⇒ 10x < −5 ⇒ x < −½. (b) Let Salem's share=x, Sunday's share=y, Shaka's share=z. x:y = ₦2 : ₦0.50 = 4:1, so x/y = 4/1 (i). y:z = ₦4 : ₦2 = 2:1, so y/z = 2/1 (ii). Combining, x:y:z = 8:2:1. Total parts = 11. Salem's share = (8/11)×₦1,100 = ₦800. Sunday's share = (2/11)×₦1,100 = ₦200. Shaka's share = (1/11)×₦1,100 = ₦100.
